LOGICAL THINKING - Grade K
Lesson 1 of 6
Activity 1
Explain what an inventor is: “An inventor is someone who has a smart idea and creates something new that helps people!
A long time ago, a woman named Margaret Knight invented a machine that made paper bags with flat bottoms—just like the ones you might get at the grocery store!
And another inventor, Marie Van Brittan Brown, made the first home security system to help keep people safe in their homes.
What do you think is one of the most important inventions?
“An invention is something new that a person makes. A discovery is something that was already there, but no one had found it yet.”
For example:
🔧 An invention is like when someone made the first bicycle—no one had ever seen one before because it had to be created!
🔍 A discovery is like when someone found a new kind of dinosaur bone—it was already in the ground, but we didn’t know it was there until someone discovered it!
Ben Franklin discovered electricity, but he did not invent it.
An inventor is the first person to conceive the idea. The inventor may not always make the the objects. They may hire someone to make it.
Inventors solve problems and use their imagination to make life better for everyone!”
Today you will brainstorm ideas of what objects could be described in this story. During the story, pause after each page and ask students to give new ideas as to what can be made with each number of dots. For example:
What new idea does someone have for making something new using one black dot?
What new idea does someone have for making something new using two black dots together?
Does anyone have any ideas for using five black dots together?
Does anyone have any ideas for using ten black dots together?
Listen to the book Ten Black Dots by Donald Crews. Asking a question after each page.
