Activity 1

One sunny morning, Ruby Robin fluttered down to the forest clearing where Owen Owl liked to sit and think. Owen was drawing little pictures in the dirt with his feather. Ruby tilted her head. “Owen, what are you doing?”

“I’m making analogies,” Owen said proudly.

Ruby blinked. “A-na-what?”

Owen smiled. “Analogies! They help us understand how things are alike. They go like this: A is to B as C is to D. It means the first two things have the same kind of relationship as the next two things.”

Ruby still looked puzzled, so Owen drew a picture in the soft dirt.

First, he drew a big sun, then beside it he drew a boy with sunglasses to represent daytime.

“Ruby,” Owen said gently, “the sun is to day…”
He added a picture of a moon and stars.
“…as the moon is to night.”
He drew a crescent moon next to a picture of a dark sky.

Ruby chirped happily. “So the sun goes with day just like the moon goes with night!”

“Exactly,” Owen hooted.

Next, Owen drew a picture of a tiny egg and next to it a picture of a baby.

“The egg is to baby…” he said.
Then he drew a nestling bird.
“…as the bird is to grown-up.”

Ruby flapped her wings. “Oh! Because a baby turns into a grown-up!”

“Right again,” Owen said.

Then Ruby wanted to try. She flew over to the dirt, tapped her little feet, and drew a cracked acorn and a sprouting seed.

“Okay, Owen,” she chirped. “The acorn is to tree…”
She drew a tall oak tree.
“…as the seed is to flower!”
She added a daisy next to it.

Owen hooted proudly. “Perfect, Ruby! You made an analogy!”

Ruby giggled. “Analogies are fun! They’re like tiny puzzles in the dirt.”

Owen nodded. “Yes, and they help our brains notice how things go together.”

And all morning long, the two friends kept drawing new pictures—
pairs of things that match,
things that grow,
and things that belong together…

…because now Ruby understood that analogies are simply ways to show how things are connected.
