LOGICAL THINKING - Grade 2

Lesson 4 of 7

Activity 1

Today we are going to look at things in different and creative ways.  Read this story:

Sammy Squirrel scampered across the meadow, his fluffy tail bouncing behind him. He was on his way to meet his friend, Cindy Spider, who had spun a shiny web near the big oak tree.

“Hi, Cindy!” Sammy called.
“Hello, Sammy!” Cindy replied, lowering herself gently on a silken thread. “It’s such a beautiful day. Do you want to look at the clouds with me?”

Sammy nodded eagerly. Together, they lay back in the soft grass and gazed up at the wide, blue sky.

“Look at that one!” Sammy pointed. “It looks like a big cotton ball.”
Cindy tilted her head. “I think it looks like a bunny hopping.”

Soon, they were both laughing and pointing at all sorts of unusual shapes in the clouds. They saw a dragon breathing fire, a teapot pouring tea, and even one that looked like a pair of glasses.

After cloud-watching, Cindy stretched her eight legs. “That was fun! Now, let’s think of all the things we know that are round or that go around.”

“Ooooh, good idea!” said Sammy. He tapped his chin thoughtfully. “A ball is round!”

Cindy clapped her tiny legs together. “Yes! And the moon is round, too.”

Sammy’s eyes sparkled. “The Earth goes around the sun.”
Cindy added, “And a wheel goes around and around.”

Sammy grinned. “What about a clock? Its hands go around in a circle.”

Read Students, can you think of other things that are round or go around?

Cindy smiled. “Circles and round things are everywhere if we look carefully.”

Sammy picked up a little stick and began poking at the dirt. “You know what? Let’s make drawings of riddles for each other to guess.”

Cindy tilted her head. “Drawings that are riddles?”
“Yes!” said Sammy. “They’re called Droodles—a drawing that’s also a riddle. I’ll draw first, and you have to guess.”

Sammy carefully drew some lines in the dirt. He made a tall line like a tree trunk, then he scribbled a shape halfway up the side.
