Today you will learn how to use the SCAMPER method to make somehing new.
Activity 2
Try to identify the parts of SCAMPER they used in this story:
One sunny Saturday morning, Sammy Squirrel and his best friend Rachel Rabbit hopped and scurried their way to a big garage sale at the edge of the forest. Tables were filled with all sorts of treasures—old toys, colorful clothes, shiny tools, and even a few things no one could quite name!
Sammy’s tail twitched with excitement. “Look at all this stuff, Rachel! I bet we could make something amazing out of it.”
Rachel’s nose wiggled as she looked around. “Yes! Let’s find things we can put together to make something new.”
They peeked under tables, dug through boxes, and then—Rachel spotted it. “Sammy, look! A kite!” she said, pulling out a bright but worn kite with a cloth tail that was a bit ragged and torn.
Sammy held up the kite. “This still has good bones,” he said proudly. “But we need to make it special.”
Just then, they noticed a shiny Slinky sitting on another table. Rachel’s ears perked up. “What if we use the Slinky instead of the old tail? It would bounce and twirl in the wind!” ***
“Brilliant!” Sammy chattered, his eyes sparkling. They tied the colorful Slinky to the kite, and it wiggled and jingled like a springy rainbow tail.
The friends got to work. First, they painted the kite with glitter paint they found in a box nearby. “Now it will sparkle in the sky like stardust,” Rachel said, brushing shiny swirls onto the fabric.***
But they weren’t done yet. On the next table, Rachel spotted a small, solar-powered calculator. “Sammy! Could we add this too?” she asked.***
"Sure," replied Sammy.
Next, they made a decision: “The calculator is too heavy,” Sammy explained, tapping it with his paw. “Let’s shrink it down so the kite can fly better.” With careful tinkering (and a little imagination), they made the calculator smaller and lighter.***
“This is great,” Rachel said. “Now the calculator will collect the sunlight and give the kite extra power!”
Sammy nodded. “We’re giving it a whole new job. Instead of adding numbers, it will help our kite soar.”***
Finally, they looked at the string. “Hmm,” Rachel said. “What if we don’t use string? ***What if we rearrange the sticks to hold the calculator and balance everything out?”***
Sammy grinned. “Perfect idea.” They moved the sticks around, tightening the kite so it was strong but light. The calculator gleamed in the middle, the Slinky tail bounced behind, and the glitter paint sparkled in the sunlight.
When the kite was ready, the animals in the forest gathered to watch. Sammy and Rachel lifted it high, and whoosh—the kite caught the wind and soared into the bright blue sky!
“Look at it fly!” the crowd cheered. The Slinky twirled, the glitter shone, and the solar calculator hummed softly as it powered the most unusual kite anyone had ever seen.
Sammy puffed out his chest. “From garage sale to sky sail,” he said proudly.
Rachel laughed. “And we did it together!”
The friends smiled as their magical new invention danced across the sky.
