QUIZ BOWL
The RESTORE Team is excited to host the second annual quiz bowl tournaments (grades 3-5 & 6-8) for the 2025-2026 school year!
Rules & Regulations
We will host two separate quiz bowl competitions this year: one for elementary (grades 3-5) and one for middle school (grades 6-8).
We will utilize teams of up to 6, with 1 student on each team designated as the team captain. Schools may register one elementary team and one middle school team. Students MUST be formally identified as “Gifted-Talented/High Ability Learner” using the RESTORE Pathway in order to be eligible to participate. Schools are welcome to rotate different HAL students on teams from one round to the next.
For each competition, we will utilize a double-elimination bracket with random placement of the schools that sign up to compete. We will begin the competition in early December.
All quiz bowl competitions will be played remotely, via a Zoom connection, using an online buzzer system. The RESTORE Team will schedule each round at a date/time that is convenient for both schools. Schools should have the Zoom projected for students during the competition. All students must also have access to a device connected to the Internet (laptop, tablet, or smartphone) so they can use the remote buzzer system (Buzzin.live). Schools will also be asked to provide scratch paper and pencils for each student, so they can compute math questions. No calculators will be allowed.
Each round will consist of 25 toss-up questions, and up to 25 bonus questions. For each toss-up question, the first student to buzz in must answer the question immediately, and will receive 1 point for a correct response. If the response is incorrect, then the other team will have the chance to buzz in and answer the question. Any team that correctly answers a toss-up question will receive a bonus question, and have 20 seconds to discuss the answer as a team. If the team captain answers the bonus question correctly, the team will receive another point.
After 25 questions, the team with the highest score will be declared the winner, and will advance in the bracket. In the event of a tie, sudden death questions will be read. The first team to buzz in and correctly answer a sudden death question will win the match.
Teams may challenge a question BEFORE THE NEXT QUESTION IS READ. The reader of the questions will be the judge, and his/her decision on the challenge will be final.
We want this to be a healthy competition for our G-T/HAL students, as well as a great way to “prep” your students for your high school quiz bowl teams. As always, THANK YOU for supporting our programming!
More information will be forwarded to you soon. Please contact RESTORE Instructional Coach & Student Project Coordinator Dave Privett at dprivett@esu2.org if you have any questions.
We appreciate your cooperation in helping us continue to enhance the opportunities offered to all of our G-T/HAL students throughout the ESU2 service area!
