EAL codes can be applied in PASI after it has been determined through a language proficiency assessment that a student whose home language is other than English requires additional English supports to reach grade-level English.
EAL Codes
301: Foreign Born EAL
302: EAL Non-funded - fee paying students (international/non-resident). This code is not to be used if a student still requires instructional and learning support and has exhausted their EAL funding.
303: Canadian Born EAL
EAL coding criteria
If a student has home language(s) other than English and requires and receives EAL supports, the student should be coded EAL.
If a student has reached their maximum five years of EAL funding, but still needs support for English language development, schools should keep the code attached to the student to indicate continued instructional and learning supports are still required.
Annual assessment requirements apply for any student coded EAL.
Information on EAL assessment documentation requirements can be found on the Alberta Education and Childcare, Supporting English as an Additional Language Learners webpage - Assessment Requirements.
See the Funding Manual for School Authorities for the latest updates to EAL coding and grant requirements.
