TooLS for ESL Leads
KEY ROLES OF SCHOOL/DISTRICT LEADS MAY INCLUDE:
Develop and actualize district policies as per AB ED ESL expectations
Support intake, testing, and placement
Tracking deadlines, manage CUM files/folders and track students
Share ELL data with stakeholders
Build bank of resources
Manage resource page and/or district website
Ongoing communication and district newsletters, e.g. ESL Tip of the Week
Provide sessions to teachers, schools and district staff
Support programming in the classroom
One on one pull-out with EA
Small group pull-out (daily or every other day)
Guided reading or guided math in class sorting of students
EA pushes into classroom to work with small group of ELLs
During whole school reading time e.g. DEAR (drop everything and read), students move to a different classroom that matches that students’ reading level
All staff including office staff, custodial and administrators are matched with a student who reads for 15 minutes a day
Study Buddy program with post secondary
Homework Club
Reading Recovery intervention, Leveled Literacy Intervention - other literacy intervention programs to support struggling readers
Parent Volunteers and Seniors to come to school regularly to be read to.

magnetic letters
manipulatives of letters/words/sentences
decodable books
books with visuals to support comprehension
high interest/low vocabulary books in learning commons
sampling of district ESL websites & documents from across the province
