Step 1: Empathize
Specify the problem that requires a solution
What type of toy do you want to design? ex. action figure, vehicle, interactive play
What do you want it to do?
What age of child is the toy you are making for?
Constraints and limitations of the project:
Create a children's toy using Fusion360 or TinkerCAD that:
Has at least one moving part.
Parts must be big enough that they can't be swallowed.
Could be printed on our printer with PLA+ plastic.
Max size of print area is 20 cm x 20 cm x 20 cm high
Parts should use minimal material (ie hollow where possible with an opening to the outside so can remove support material)
moving parts need a space tolerance of at least 0.5 mm.
tight fit but still moves, tolerance is 0.25 mm
Cost allowance - $20.
Material costs $35 per kilogram
Time - This design should take 4 weeks to plan, design, and present.
Experience - your previous knowledge of materials, the tasks you'd have to do (ex. wiring, CAD, etc), would help determine/limit the complexity of the project
Project ideas must be approved by the teacher before beginning the next steps
Assignment: Design Proposal
It is time to formalize your ideas for your project. Create a new folder in your ePortfolio and name it "Toy Design project" put a document in it named "Step 1: Empathize" in it.
Items in this document are:
Problem Statement - What toy you'd like to design and what it will do - include possible constraints and limitations to your project
Equipment/Knowledge Requirements - Initial list of equipment to be used, knowledge requirements
My Experience - list any previous experience with CAD, design, etc. that you will be using to complete your project
Initial work plan timeline - All work on this project needs to be completed before June 8th.
Note: Constraints and limitations, list of equipment and knowledge requirements, and work plan timeline will likely evolve throughout the project as you gain more experience and knowledge about your goal and project.
You MUST obtain approval of your Design Proposal from the teacher before moving on to the next step of the design process. This can be done vie email or in an office hours session.
When you have obtained approval to go on to the next step in the design process.
