Principals and school leaders can play a vital role in attracting and retaining suitable teachers. New teachers who are made to feel welcome, are provided with well-planned inductions, are supported by mentors, and have access to professional and social networks, are more likely to feel satisfied with their jobs and committed to the school and community. Some suggestions to support newly appointed teachers include:
Strong induction program or welcome event, including activities for partners/family members
A verbal briefing along with providing some useful resources about the school and community
Access to high quality ongoing professional learning and development opportunities
Assigning the teacher with a mentor or coach
Scheduling a regular time with the teacher to meet and discuss any issues, needs, and barriers to their integration into the school/community.
While the TFI and STARRS initiative provides funding to attract, retain, and develop excellent teachers to fill hard-to-staff positions in government schools across the state, additional support is often necessary to facilitate teachers’ relocation and help them settle into their new roles.
