Starting at a new school is exciting but can also be daunting. You might like to schedule a regular time to meet and discuss any issues or needs with your mentor, Principal, or a trusted colleague.
For any issues related to mental health and wellbeing, teachers can contact the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) on 1300 361 008. The EAP is a free-of-charge and strictly confidential counselling service. The EAP is available 24/7 to discuss any personal or work-related issues. Immediate family members of Department employees can also access EAP.

The information provided in your Welcome Pack will assist you to plan for your move and to settle in your new community. Your school will help populate this with key information, insights and advice intended to help you better understand the local community and teaching context. We suggest that you build on this content prior to, and upon your arrival at the school and that you continue to seek further information and learn from the people around you to assist in building your readiness to live and teach in a rural or regional school.
Your principal will have prepared a structured induction program to support your introduction to the school context and meet your new colleagues. You can familiarise yourself with the school’s website and newsletters to find out more about the culture and values of the school as well as its curriculum offerings and the needs and interests of the students.
Your success will in part be measured by your willingness to learn about, and engage with the community and build new relationships. There may be opportunities for you to take an active role and participate in community and cultural events. Attending or participating in local activities such as sport or cultural events can be an informal and relaxing way to meet and get to know community members.
Teachers are encouraged to speak to their teacher mentors, colleagues or school leaders when they face issues related to their mental health and wellbeing.
