In lieu of the proposed face-to-face workshop which was to have been delivered in Regions in Term 2, Martin James will now facilitate two webinars. These will happen in May within your broader Regional area, giving schools an opportunity to get together in a bigger Community of Practice.
Throughout the terms, the Local Coordinator will be your main point of contact and will support you in any way you might need as an individual and a school. They will support you with your project and work within the school, offer Professional Development and facilitate network meetings.
Local Coordinators will communicate with principals and TFI teacher via email, over the phone, via video conference and through the STARRS website.
The proposed Webinars will take place after school hours (3:45-4:45) and will count towards teachers’ PD hours. They will receive a calendar invitation and Webex meeting invitation.
Your Local Coordinator will arrange a suitable time to facilitate a kick starter meeting. An opportunity to touch base and recap on the work undertaken at the Conference.
Mildura/Ararat - 11 May
Shepparton - 12 May

It is likely that teachers will want to talk about how to prepare for returning to classrooms. Many will be concerned about the immediate needs of students and will be looking for strategies that support their transition back to school. Teachers will need to be prepared for talking about the virus and its impact on us all. They will need to consider what information or answers to questions are appropriate at each age/year level and how they will support children who seem to be deeply affected by the situation. Each school will be different. Some will have complex family needs, some will have staffing issues, others will need to think outside the box to cope with whatever surprises present themselves. Each school needs to find a way to move forward that reflects the needs of their students and community.
Network meetings can provide a safe place to have professional conversations, express concerns, share ideas and ask questions. For this reason we have decided to postpone the work on Prototyping and use this week’s webinar to focus on the issues that will be at the forefront of teachers’ concerns. The webinar will provide teachers with strategies to better understand how their students are feeling, uncover some common messages, challenges and opportunities that are hiding beneath the surface. Teachers will feel more confident about returning to face-to-face teaching if they are armed with some effective tools and resources and have had the opportunity to discuss their concerns in a supportive environment.
Learning through design - Prototyping 101 (PDF, 1094kb): What is it? Prototyping makes ideas seem real so we can find out more about how they work. It is an approach to developing and testing ideas at an early stage to learn about how users might use and interact with them, in a low-risk environment and before large amounts of resources are committed to them. It is an iterative learning process, helping us to ‘fail earlier and often so that we can succeed sooner’.
Learning through design - the design journey (PDF, 675kb): This slide deck will walk through the design journey we are using in the STARRS program. It hopes to act as a reminder to those of you who were present and may have forgotten some of the concepts. For those of you who weren’t there this deck is a simple introduction to the ways of working in this program.
Learning through design - prototyping 102 (PDF, 1363kb): In this slide deck, you will walk you through the exploration of prototyping, developing a prototype and extended prototyping.
Learning through design - Understanding student needs post covid (PDF, 748kb): In this slide deck, you will gain insights about working with your students moving forward using 3 simple tools.
COVID-19 Survey - Covering multiple dimensions
Keep Discard Amplify and Create - is a prioritising tool to amplify or create something that requires to be discarded. It's a simple way for students to signal how tech works best for them in supporting their learning.
COVID-19 Journey - Tool Understanding the emotional journey your students have gone through is as important as their learning journey.
Prototyping template (PDF, 69kb): This template is a helpful tool to assist you in building your prototype ideas
Quick COVID Survey (PDF, 64kb): Use this template with your students to see how things have changed in relation to school and learning during lock down.
Ethnography booklet (PDF, 706kb): Ethnographic research is usually done by professional researchers over a long period of weeks, months, even years. Its aim is to understand the unspoken rules, habits and ways in which people in groups see themselves and others, and how they live their lives.
