Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) provides VM students with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a real workplace setting that complements their VET and classroom studies. Students must attend SWL to pass their WRS units. Through SWL, students can:
Develop practical, job-ready skills.
Understand workplace expectations and routines.
Build confidence, independence, and responsibility.
Explore potential career interests and future employment opportunities.
Schedule and Duration
Workplace Learning Day: Every Friday during the school term.
Duration:
Year 11 VM students: Terms 2, 3, and 4.
Year 12 VM students: Terms 2 and 3 only.
Term 1: Dedicated to planning, preparing, and finalising work placements. All work placements must be finalised by the end of Term 1
Students are responsible for securing their own Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) placement. This process helps develop independence, initiative and employability skills while encouraging students to take ownership of their career pathway.
To ensure placements can be approved and organised, all workplace arrangements must be finalised by the end of Term 1.
Students are expected to:
find a suitable workplace that aligns with their interests, VET program or career goals
submit all required documentation (including the SWL Arrangement Form and employer details) by the published deadline
attend their workplace punctually and consistently each Friday
notify both their employer and the school as soon as possible if they are unable to attend
demonstrate professionalism, responsibility and respectful behaviour at all times in the workplace
comply with all workplace health and safety requirements and employer expectations.
The school is committed to supporting students throughout the Structured Workplace Learning program. Support includes:
assisting students with résumé preparation, job applications and contacting employers
providing advice and guidance throughout the placement process
maintaining regular communication with students and employers
monitoring attendance, progress and workplace feedback
working with students and employers to address any concerns that arise during the placement.
