All VCE studies have SACs or SATs. They are school based assessments that normally occur under test conditions. All SACs and SATs receive a letter grade or a numerical score. SACs and SATs in Units 3 and 4 contribute to a student’s study score. Students undertaking a non-ATAR course are not required to undertake SACs or SATs. SAT’s only apply to the following studies: Art, Studio Arts, Media, Visual Communication & Design, and Computing (Informatics).
All SAC or SAT scores at Unit 3 and 4 level awarded by Sunshine College staff are unmoderated. Marks may change after VCAA statistical moderation process at the end of the year. For each subject internal marks on School Assessed Coursework are moderated against the external exam result(s) of the group and the GAT. If the internal SAC marks for a group are lower than the exam results for that group, the internal marks will be moved up. Likewise, if the internal marks are higher than the exam results the internal marks will be moved down.
Students enrolled in VCE will receive a Course Calendar from their subject teacher at the beginning of the year, outlining the course structure and key assessment dates. Additionally, an assessment schedule with specific dates for each SAC or SAT will be provided early in the school year.
Where a VCE study is delivered across multiple classes, Sunshine College will ensure consistency and fairness in the administration of School-Assessed Coursework (SACs).
Teachers must minimise the time gap between classes when administering the same SAC. Where this is not feasible, the assessment task must be appropriately modified to maintain the integrity of the assessment and ensure that no group of students is advantaged or disadvantaged.
Students absent from a scheduled SAC must provide a valid medical certificate or appropriate documentation to be eligible to reschedule their SAC. Upon approval, the student will be required to complete a modified or alternative SAC. The alternative SAC must be of comparable scope, difficulty, and assessed using the same rubric to ensure fairness and consistency across the cohort.
Students seeking an extension for the submission of School-Assessed Coursework must apply prior to the due date using the school’s Extension Application Form and provide appropriate supporting documentation (e.g., a medical certificate). The subject teacher, in consultation with the Year Level Coordinator, will determine the outcome, and the student will be notified of the revised due date. Failure to obtain an approved extension may result in the work not being assessed and the awarding of an ‘N’ for the outcome. All records will be retained for VCAA compliance.
After School Assessed Coursework and School Assessed Tasks have been submitted and marked, teachers will provide feedback to students within a reasonable time. This should be no longer than two weeks from the SAC date.
Teachers will give students either a numerical or a letter grade on School Assessed Coursework.
Appropriate feedback includes advice on problem areas and advice on where and how improvements can be made.
For each subject internal marks on School Assessed Coursework are moderated against the external exam result(s) of the group and the GAT. If the internal marks are lower than the exam results the internal marks will be moved up. Likewise, if the internal marks are higher than the exam results the internal marks will be moved down.
Students who are unable to attend a scheduled SAC or assessment task must notify both the school and their subject teacher as soon as possible. A medical certificate or other appropriate supporting documentation is generally required for the absence to be approved.
Where the absence is approved, the student will be given the opportunity to complete the assessment at a time arranged with their subject teacher, within a reasonable timeframe.
School-assessed Tasks (SATs) in Units 3 and 4 are completed over an extended period of time. Students are required to meet the authentication requirements outlined in their subject's Authentication Record Form and complete each stage of the task according to the timeline set by their teacher.
Students who do not meet the required checkpoints or fail to submit their work by the final deadline may risk having their work deemed unauthenticated or ineligible for assessment and grading.
Students are responsible for ensuring that all assessment work is submitted to their teacher by the required deadline and confirming that it has been received.
Where a Unit 3 or 4 School-assessed Coursework (SAC) or School-assessed Task (SAT) is lost, stolen or damaged, the student and/or teacher may be required to provide a written statement outlining the circumstances.
The Principal (or delegate), in consultation with the teacher and based on available evidence and records, will determine an initial assessment outcome. This result may be reviewed or adjusted in accordance with VCAA requirements and processes.
A student who uses a computer to produce work for assessment is responsible for ensuring that:
• There is an alternative system available for producing assessable work in case of computer or printer malfunction or unavailability
• Hard copies of the work in progress are produced regularly
• Each time changes are made, the work is saved as a backup file, which should not be stored on the computer.
