For satisfactory completion of a unit, a student must demonstrate achievement of each of the outcomes for that unit as specified in the Study Design. This decision will be based on the teacher's judgment of the student's performance on assessment tasks and class work designated for the unit. The key knowledge and skills and the Advice for Teachers included in the Study Design will assist teachers in making this judgment. The judgment of satisfactory completion is a school responsibility.
To achieve an outcome the student must:
• Produce work that meets the required standard
• Submit work on time under negotiated timelines
• Submit work that is clearly his or her own
• Observe the VCAA and school rules
The teacher judges that all outcomes are achieved, the student satisfactorily completes the unit. Examinations do not solely determine an ‘S’ or ‘N’ grade. Examinations are used in conjunction with work undertaken during the semester which determines whether learning outcomes have been achieved.
A teacher’s judgement on whether the student has satisfactorily achieved the outcomes for a study as determined by evidence gained through the assessment of a range of set work (learning activities) and assessment tasks (including school based assessments) must be consistent for all students who are being assessed for levels of achievement in the study and those who are not.
The teacher is responsible for judging satisfactory completion of a unit. By reporting satisfactory completion, the teacher is certifying that the student has achieved the set of outcomes for the unit according to the rules set out by the VCAA and the school.
Sunshine College is committed to supporting students to successfully complete their studies. If a student is identified as being at risk of receiving a Not Satisfactory (N) result for a unit, the school will work closely with the student and their family to provide support and opportunities for improvement.
When a student is identified as being at risk, the following steps will occur:
The teacher will discuss the concerns with the student and provide clear feedback about what is required to achieve a satisfactory result.
The teacher will notify the Year Level Coordinator, who will work with the teacher and Student Engagement Leader to coordinate appropriate supports and interventions.
Parents/carers will be contacted and kept informed of the student's progress and the support being provided.
Students will be given opportunities to demonstrate that they have achieved the required learning outcomes where appropriate.
The school will continue to monitor the student's progress and work collaboratively with the student and their family to maximise the opportunity for successful completion of the unit.
If a student does not initially demonstrate an outcome satisfactorily, they may be provided with further opportunities to demonstrate the required knowledge and skills.
Students should note that:
the school will provide at two opportunities to redeem an outcome
redemption tasks may differ from the original assessment task
teachers may use a range of evidence, including classwork, homework, practical activities, discussions or additional tasks, to determine whether an outcome has been achieved
redemption opportunities are designed to demonstrate satisfactory completion of an outcome, not to improve an assessment score
the original assessment score will remain unchanged, even if the outcome is later redeemed.
A student may receive a Not Satisfactory (N) result for a unit if they:
do not demonstrate the required learning outcomes
do not complete or submit required assessment tasks by the due date (unless an approved extension or Special Provision applies)
are unable to authenticate that the submitted work is their own
commit a significant breach of assessment or authentication rules.
For VCE students, a J result is recorded when a student has stopped attending a unit and has not submitted work for assessment but has not officially withdrawn from the subject.
A J result is recorded on the VCAA database and is treated similarly to an N result for tertiary selection purposes. Students wishing to withdraw from a subject should speak with their Year Level Coordinator as soon as possible.
