To satisfactorily complete a VCE Vocational Major (VM) unit, students must demonstrate achievement of all learning outcomes for the unit. Teachers make this decision by considering a range of evidence collected throughout the semester.
Evidence may include classwork, assessment tasks, projects, practical activities, presentations, discussions, observations and other learning activities completed during the unit.
To achieve a Satisfactory (S) result, students must:
demonstrate the required knowledge and skills for each learning outcome
complete and submit required work by the agreed deadlines
submit work that is their own and can be authenticated
comply with VCAA and Sunshine College assessment and authentication requirements.
Teachers may consider a range of evidence when determining whether a student has achieved the learning outcomes. A single assessment task does not, on its own, determine whether a student receives a Satisfactory (S) or Not Satisfactory (N) result.
The decision to award an S or N is made by the classroom teacher based on professional judgement and the student's demonstrated achievement of the learning outcomes. These judgements are made consistently across all students in accordance with VCAA requirements and Sunshine College assessment procedures.
Sunshine College is committed to supporting students to successfully complete their studies. If a student is identified as being at risk of receiving a Not Satisfactory (N) result for a unit, the school will work closely with the student and their family to provide support and opportunities for improvement.
When a student is identified as being at risk, the following steps will occur:
The teacher will discuss the concerns with the student and provide clear feedback about what is required to achieve a satisfactory result.
The teacher will notify the Year Level Coordinator, who will work with the teacher and Student Engagement Leader to coordinate appropriate supports and interventions.
Parents/carers will be contacted and kept informed of the student's progress and the support being provided.
Students will be given opportunities to demonstrate that they have achieved the required learning outcomes where appropriate.
The school will continue to monitor the student's progress and work collaboratively with the student and their family to maximise the opportunity for successful completion of the unit.
If a student does not initially demonstrate an outcome satisfactorily, they may be provided with further opportunities to demonstrate the required knowledge and skills.
Students should note that:
the school will provide at two opportunities to redeem an outcome
redemption tasks may differ from the original assessment task
teachers may use a range of evidence, including classwork, homework, practical activities, discussions or additional tasks, to determine whether an outcome has been achieved
redemption opportunities are designed to demonstrate satisfactory completion of an outcome, not to improve an assessment score
the original assessment score will remain unchanged, even if the outcome is later redeemed.
A student may receive a Not Satisfactory (N) result for a unit if they:
do not demonstrate the required learning outcomes
do not complete or submit required assessment tasks by the due date (unless an approved extension or Special Provision applies)
are unable to authenticate that the submitted work is their own
commit a significant breach of assessment or authentication rules.
For VCE students, a J result is recorded when a student has stopped attending a unit and has not submitted work for assessment but has not officially withdrawn from the subject.
A J result is recorded on the VCAA database and is treated similarly to an N result for tertiary selection purposes. Students wishing to withdraw from a subject should speak with their Year Level Coordinator as soon as possible.
