Unit 1: General Mathematics
In Unit 1, students study data types and distributions, summary statistics, and comparing datasets. They explore sequences, linear functions and relations, including graphs, modelling, and solving equations. Students also learn matrices and matrix operations to solve practical problems such as population growth and decay.
Areas of Study:
● AOS 1: Investigating and comparing data distributions
● AOS 2: Arithmetic and geometric sequences, first-order linear
recurrence relations and financial mathematics
● AOS 3: Functions, relations and graphs
● AOS 4: Matrices
Unit 2: General Mathematics
In Unit 2, students study relationships between two variables using scatterplots and regression, and apply graphs and networks to solve problems such as shortest paths and minimum spanning trees. They explore direct and inverse variation, linearisation of data, measurement, accuracy, scale, similarity, and apply Pythagoras’ theorem in practical contexts.
Areas of Study:
● AOS 1: Investigating relationships between two numerical
variables
● AOS 2: Graphs and networks
● AOS 3: Variation
● AOS 4: Space, measurement and applications of trigonometry
Unit 3: General Mathematics
In Unit 3, students apply mathematics to real-world contexts through data analysis, probability, statistics, and discrete mathematics. They investigate data distributions, relationships between variables, linear modelling, and time series data. Students also study financial mathematics including depreciation, loans, compound interest, annuities, and investments.
Areas of Study:
● AOS 1: Data Analysis, Probability and Statistics
● AOS 2: Recursion & Financial Modelling
Unit 4: General Mathematics
In Unit 4, students apply matrices and network methods to solve practical problems including permutations, communication, and matrix operations. They also study transition matrices and use graphs and networks to model optimisation problems such as shortest paths, flow, matching, scheduling, and critical path analysis.
Areas of Study:
● AOS 1: Matrices
● AOS 2: Networks
