Unit 1: EAL
In Unit 1, students read and view texts to build personal connections while exploring characters, settings, plot, ideas, values, and narrative voice. They engage with mentor texts to study effective writing and experiment with structure, language features, and ideas in their own work. Students develop their understanding of how texts are shaped by context, purpose, and audience, and how vocabulary and language choices combine to create compelling writing.

Unit 2: EAL
In Unit 2, students build on Unit 1 by studying a different text type and exploring how historical, social, and cultural contexts shape meaning. They analyse how arguments are developed across various media and practise responding to persuasive texts through notes, summaries, short answers, and analytical writing. Students also create and present a point of view text for oral presentation.

Unit 3: EAL
In this unit, students critically engage with texts by analysing characters, context, and meaning, including historical, social, and cultural influences on interpretation and audience response. They read mentor texts to develop imaginative and analytical understanding, exploring how vocabulary, structure, language features, and ideas combine to create effective and compelling writing.

Unit 4: EAL
In this unit, students refine their reading and viewing skills to critically analyse texts and explore ideas and values. They study how argument, language, and visuals are used across media to debate contemporary national or global issues, and how these elements shape audience perspectives.
