Skills applied to the dance

Body Skills

The list below is the body skills studied in the HSC Dance Syllabus.

  • Body awareness
  • Principles of alignment/body placement
  • Body articulation
  • Axial movement
  • Locomotor movement
  • Turns
  • Falls
  • Balance
  • Control
  • Elevation
  • Kinaesthetic awareness

Activity

  1. Define each of the above body skills in your own words.
  2. Select one example from your Core Performance dance of each of the body skills.
  3. Using the examples from each of the body skills, select an area of safe dance practice either, warm up/cool down, stretching, alignment – body awareness, body limitations, causes, prevention and treatment of injury, body maintenance, strength, cardio and muscular endurance, and discuss the relationship to the body skill performed.

For example: when discussing elevation you may like to identify the importance of safe dance practice i.e. landing from a jump and therefore incorporate your understanding of the importance of alignment and kinaesthetic awareness within your response.
