Projection

Projection is the dancer’s ability to project energy outward and confidently so that they may communicate clear images and ideas. The dancer’s ability to manipulate the active and general space, control the elements of dance and to provide clarity in lines and shapes assists also in projecting ideas. Projection must remain consistent throughout, so as to continue to express and sustain audience interest in the dance. There is a difference between internal and external projection, generally external projection is the use of more open shapes, where the energy is projected outwards. Internal projection generally uses closed shapes and the energy is internalized, often communicating shyness, fear, insecurity.

Activity

Focus

Focus in dance generally refers to the eye line. The focus often indicates the way in which the dancer and the movement will travel, or where the dancers want the audience to look. Focus can be suggested through gesture and the eyes focusing on a particular part of the stage, while the rest of the body moves in another direction.

Commitment and Consistency

Commitment and consistency are important in dance. Clarity in movement shapes, line and a purposeful use of the elements of dance will assist in the clear communication of your movement shapes. If a dancer looks like they are lacking in energy and gusto and the dancer moves in and out of the focus and projection it can affect the overall quality of the movement, and the performance aesthetic. There is an interrelationship of the aspects of performance quality: quality of line, projection and focus in order to present a committed and confident Core Performance dance.
