Performance quality
'The interrelationship between the quality of line, control and variation of dynamics and kinaesthetic awareness in realising the concept/intent of a performance'
Control and variation of time and dynamics
Temporal variation and dynamic variation of movement can provide interest for an audience in the same way as the use of space and music can. Conscious manipulation of dynamics and time will enhance meaning in your dance and will further demonstrate your skills in being able to perform movements that vary in energy, force and length of time. As a performer, you will need to understand the relationship between time and dynamics and how to control and manipulate them further to explore performance quality. Control is the performer’s conscious decision to perform movements in a variety of ways to show different interpretations.
Activity
Identify and describe how you have used dynamics in your dance to further create interest and contours (300 words). Provide specific examples from your Core Performance dance.
Document the phrases with a series of photographs/illustrations. Please use both descriptive and technical vocabulary in your responses.
Quality of line
Quality of line depends on the dancers understanding of kinaesthetic awareness and placement of body parts in relation to one another and in the space. Your alignment plays a crucial role in expression and your aesthetic and artistic quality of line. Shapes need to look complete, therefore the lines have clarity, curved lines look rounded and straight lines appear long and extending into the active space.
Activity
Select three shapes from your Core Performance dance.
- Discuss how quality of line was achieved in each key shape.
- Draw on the photographs the continuation of line and energy throughout the limbs.
- Label the photographs with the muscles and bones that enable you to perform these movements with quality of line using anatomical terminology.
Please use both descriptive and technical vocabulary in your responses.
