Writing – Breaking Down the Barriers
Lisa Craig - Principal Teacher, Aberlady Primary School
Looking to raise attainment in writing, I have been investigating why children are not enjoying writing and how they know what their targets are. This has involved getting feedback from the children about what works for them and allowing different approaches to be tested out in the class to make an IMPACT. (Learning about the barriers to enjoyment of writing?, what works? And how do we know the changes are leading to improvement?)
Let's Love to Read!
Nicole Mackie - Class Teacher, Cockenzie Primary School
The project was to nurture the love of reading for children and for this to be transferred into their household and adopt a positive reading environment for all. The parents received the tools which allowed them to confidently and consistently nurture their child's love of reading and support their reading progression at home. I provided positive, individualised next steps and feedback online to parents/carers which not only supported the child but their adults too.
Writing – The Impact of the PM Approach on Learners
Gordon Richerby - Class Teacher, Law Primary, North Berwick
Having started to use a new writing resource based on Stephen Graham’s approach, PM writing, I examined how to maximise the impact it has on the children’s work. To assess this I tracked: the overall impact on the quality of pupils writing within specific genres; the benefits of developing pupils’ peer and self-assessment skills; pupils’ ability to articulate their next steps; the use of a working wall.
Writing – Upskilling Primary 2 Learners
Rowan Johnson – Class Teacher, St Martin’s Primary School, Tranent
Picture this; a time where covid has derailed our infant pupils’ literacy attainment; where our children need a boost towards achieving their writing dreams. Can guided target setting using VCOP, upskill Primary 2 pupils at St Martins Primary School? Allowing them to reach their potential with pride; elevating them up as they climb the ladder to success.

Second Level Writing – Notebooking and Journaling
Fiona Hayes - Principal Teacher, St Martin's RC Primary School, Tranent
In a ‘Tranentian’ world where children are voicing a disengagement in writing lessons, mark marking and being expressively literate. A world where they are void of that overwhelmingly magical feeling of being totally immersed in their own fantastical imaginations. The P7 cohort at St Martin's RC Primary School began weekly Notebooking and Journaling sessions. Can this reignite the flames that had started to dim?
Early Level Play in P1
Gillian Allan – Class Teacher, Dunbar Primary School
The importance of children learning through play is evident in national guidance and schools are working to ensure they are delivering Early Level through a play pedagogy. My project sets out to explore ways of shifting the focus from small group teaching to learning through play within my Primary 1 classroom.
Closing the Poverty Related Attainment Gap in Reading at Primary 2
Natasha O’Connor – DHT, Gullane Primary School
This professional enquiry focused on closing the poverty related attainment gap of a group of children who had not achieved early level reading by the end of Primary 1 and were not on track to have achieved this by the end of Primary 2. Over the course of a term, I investigated the implementation of a targeted phonics and oral narrative story telling approach, along with improving parental engagement and support staff skills, knowledge and confidence.

Second Level Writing – Supporting ASN Pupils
Mark Tierney – Class Teacher, St Mary’s RC Primary School, Haddington
Increasing the consistency of achieved success criteria in writing for pupils with ASN at second level.
