Lesson #14
Multiplayer Games
It's great fun playing solo, but sometimes a competitive edge is just what a game needs to take it to the next level. Niall from Tablet Academy Scotland is going to show how you can change a 1 player game into 2 players, so you can enjoy your creation with your friends. This lesson builds on some skills that were mentioned in Lesson 5!Â
Learning Intention
Use previous skills learned to turn your single player game into a 2 player game.
Success Criteria
I can use two sets of buttons to control sprites.
I can copy and Paste code for various sprites.
I can play a 2 player game on scratch.
Introduction
Single-player games are designed for solo play, where you engage with computer-controlled opponents or challenges. They are great for players who want a deep and engaging story. They are usually considered to be more captivating. Multiplayer games, on the other hand, involve playing with or against real players from around the world, adding a social and competitive element to the experience. They are ideal for players who want a social and competitive experience.
Make note of 3 single player games and 3 multiplayer games. Write down some pros and cons for each game and try to determine which you prefer to play. You can enjoy both, but try to choose your preference and have a class vote to see which is most popular.
Key Learning in the Main Task Video
Controlling a sprite in multiple ways
Adding variables for each player.
Duplicating code.
Plenary
If you managed to put together a multiplayer game using Niall's help, have a go at being competitive with your classmates. Can you play a game against at least 3 classmates. Make sure to give some feedback when you finished. It's not about winning these games, it's about helping your classmates make their game even better.
