Thinking about your topic before you begin writing gives you a chance to articulate the information you want to include in your piece and enables you to determine whether you know enough about your topic for it to be viable. If you decide you need to do some more research to build up you knowledge, this work will also help to narrow down the information for which you search. Evaluating topic choice is an important reflect skill for a writer.
This process will be modelled by your teacher before you begin testing out your ideas.
Students will plug their information into a planner. You will be given 5 minutes.
This planner will now be used as a basis for the students' on demand writing diagnostic text. In your notebooks, students will write an informational paragraph that could be included in a Real or Fake book.
Students will continue to read and annotate the article as well as answer the reading comprehension questions about the text.
