Mentor texts are a selection of curated texts that are read, analyzed and revisited multiples times throughout a unit during lessons and conferences. When students study and revisit samples from the form and genre in which they are writing, they are better equipped to compose rich pieces of their own.
Students are more able to analyze a piece in terms of writing components when they have had the opportunity to explore and discuss the piece as a reader - that is thinking about the content and meaning. This is especially true for this particular genre as it provokes opinions and predictions.
Working in partnerships, students will read five Real or Fake paragraphs.
Full Stomach Causes Sneezing
One Pricey Potty
Chimp Climbs the Charts
Students Strike Over Homework
Why Sloths Are So Slow
After reading each one, partners will have a short discussion on whether they believe the topic is real or fake.
Working independently, each student will then complete the survey form and provide their justification for their thinking.
For each paragraph, we will have a class discussion. Students will present their rationale for their decisions. Answers will be reveal after the discussions.
