Transition Words (Handout):
Special words that we use in our writing when we are moving from one idea to the next.
Transition means change and when we are changing ideas we used these words to connect our writing.
Help the reader follow along with your writing.
Task:
Revisit the paragraph you wrote about sports.
If you used transition words at the beginning of your Reason sentences, circle them. You can change any if you would like to.
If you didn’t use transition words at the beginning of your Reason sentences, add them in and highlight them.
We will go through together the process of creating a t-chart to determine your opinion on topic. By trying to come up with reasons to agree or disagree with an opinion, you can see which argument is stronger.
The teacher will model how to use a t-chart to complete a planner for a persuasive paragraph.
Choose one of the following topics:
Students should be required to wear school uniforms.
Social media is making us less social.
Social media does more harm than good.
The school day should start later.
Fiction is better than non-fiction.
Modern music is better than classical music.
Complete a T-chart using Agree on one side and Disagree on the other in order to compare the different perspectives about your chosen statement. (COMPLETE ON GOOGLE CLASSROOM)
Use your completed T-chart to form your opinion.
Organize your opinions and reasons onto your planner.
Add details to “stop” and support your reasons.
Add your wrap-up or concluding sentence.
Complete a second t-chart and planner with a new topic.
Students will share their writing and see how their work might have differed from their classmates.
