Students can listen to opinions and create counterarguments.
Students will complete a Reading Journal entry.
We will go through debate preparation and today's format as well as discuss the benefits and proper etiquette of debating.
Students will be placed into groups of 5.
Roles:
Team A: Presents their persuasive text and argument to Student B
Team B: Comes up with a counterargument for the opinion statement.
Student C: Moderator and Judge - makes sure that each speaker if waiting their turn and decides who presented the stronger argument.
Format:
First affirmative (0.5 minute)
First negative (0.5 minute)
Second affirmative (0.5 minute)
Second negative (0.5 minute)
Break to prepare (1 minutes)
Negative rebuttal/summary (0.5 minutes) - no new arguments
Positive rebuttal/summary (0.5 minutes) - no new arguments
