Practice Before the Practice Matters Most

Professional learning should provide educators with opportunities to do more than discuss effective instruction. Educators also need opportunities to practice.

The Department of Professional Development uses rehearsal as a low-risk, practice-based coaching strategy that allows educators to try an instructional move, receive focused feedback, make an adjustment, and practice again before working with students. We also develop coaches, facilitators, teacher leaders, and school leaders to use rehearsal as part of ongoing professional learning.

Rehearsal strengthens the connection between professional development and classroom implementation.

Learn → Practice → Receive Feedback → Adjust → Practice Again → Implement

Educators may rehearse questioning, modeling, lesson openings, explanations, routines, responses to misconceptions, checks for understanding, or other high-impact instructional practices.

Rehearsal helps educators build fluency, confidence, and readiness so that new learning is more likely to transfer successfully into classroom practice.
