Internalization Tools
Supports teachers in closely examining a text before instruction to identify its complexity, key ideas, vocabulary, structure, knowledge demands, and potential barriers for students. This tool helps teachers anticipate where students may need support while maintaining the rigor of the text.
Helps teachers study an assessment to determine what students are expected to know, understand, and do. Teachers identify priority standards, required knowledge and skills, item demands, and evidence of mastery so instruction can be intentionally aligned to the assessment.
Guides teachers in evaluating whether instructional tasks are aligned to the intended standard, learning objective, and level of rigor. The tool helps ensure students are completing work that actually prepares them to demonstrate mastery.
Supports teachers in creating or identifying examples of high-quality student work that demonstrate the expected level of performance. Exemplars help clarify expectations, support feedback, and provide students with a concrete picture of what success looks like.
Helps teachers intentionally plan questions and discussion opportunities that move students from basic understanding to deeper analysis, reasoning, and application. The tool also supports planning for student-to-student discourse and opportunities for students to explain and defend their thinking.
Guides teachers in anticipating common misunderstandings, errors, or incomplete thinking students may demonstrate during a lesson. Teachers identify likely misconceptions, evidence to watch for, and instructional responses that can be used to address them in the moment.
Supports teachers in identifying the background knowledge, vocabulary, concepts, and connections students need to successfully engage with upcoming content. The tool helps teachers intentionally build knowledge across lessons rather than teaching skills in isolation.
Helps teachers translate a learning objective or standard into clear, observable indicators of successful learning. Success criteria clarify what students should know or be able to do and provide a foundation for monitoring progress, giving feedback, and helping students evaluate their own work.
Resource Analysis Tool
Supports teachers in intentionally analyzing the visual, informational, and multimedia resources students will encounter during instruction. Resources may include photographs, graphs, charts, diagrams, maps, models, tables, infographics, primary sources, videos, or other representations.
