Building Instructional Capacity Through Collaborative Planning

Strong instruction begins before the lesson starts.

The Department of Professional Development uses co-planning to strengthen educators' ability to internalize curriculum, understand standards and intended learning, anticipate student thinking, and make purposeful instructional decisions. We also develop instructional leaders, coaches, and facilitators to use co-planning as a capacity-building practice rather than simply helping teachers complete lesson plans.

Within a professional learning system, co-planning connects professional learning directly to the work teachers are preparing to implement.

Effective co-planning allows educators to think deeply about HQIM, student needs, assessment evidence, questioning, scaffolds, and checks for understanding before instruction occurs.

The purpose is not for the coach or leader to plan for the teacher. It is to plan with the teacher so that, over time, the educator becomes increasingly skilled and independent in making strong instructional decisions.
