Not Like the Rest
Annie Hodges: Canyon of Heroes
Sara Kathryn Breland: Not like the Rest
Everyone keeps telling me
That I am unlike the rest
That I am the odd flower in an orchard of perfect trees
That I am the one who is different and is seen as less
I can tell right from wrong
I don’t obsess with being the best
I don’t believe that power is what makes me strong
And I know how to fix my own mess
But that’s not important, to the people of importance
Because to them, only strict perfection makes you worth listening to
Only if I am like them will they gain feelings of accordance
For the many with minds are loved opposed to the flourishing few
I don’t believe in holding a grudge
And I love people for their quirks
I believe this generation has been misjudged
I believe obsessing over success does not replace work
But that’s not important, to the people of importance
Because to them, only strict perfection makes you worth listening to
Only if I am like them will they gain feelings of accordance
For the many with minds are loved opposed to the flourishing few
I strive to speak less and listen more
I believe compassion is valuable
I think this life is worth living for
I don’t think all people were meant to be compatible
But that’s not important, to the people of importance
Because to them, only strict perfection makes you worth listening to
Only if I am like them will they gain feelings of accordance
For the many with minds are loved opposed to the flourishing few
My goal is to be something for others
Who know what it’s like to live as an inferior
And know what lies this world utters
And feel as if they are the opposite of superior
I think ordinary is something I will never achieve
But my independence makes me free
And although they continue to tell me that I will not succeed
Don’t worry, just wait, you have not seen the last of me
