Washington’s Farewell Address: In 1796, Washington had the opportunity and popular vote to have been reelected as president for a third term, but he voluntarily resigned. With his withdrawal from office, he wrote a public statement to the citizens of America. Washington understood how horrible relations were under Great Britain before the American Revolution and therefore tried to discourage future presidential leaders from involving the U.S. in forign trade and wars. Acknowledging that the United States was still a young nation, he warned political officials and citizens of certain activities, such as engaging in foreign affairs or forming internal political parties. However, some of this document’s warning came too late, as political factions had already begun forming under his presidency. The rise of political parties further following Washington’s resignation. On the other hand, some of the following presidents did listen to part of what he said, as they attempted to avoid conflict and wars with European powers as much as possible.
