ICT INTEGRATION
In our current pandemic situation, the convenient utilization of ICT or digital technologies to learn has shaped the teaching and learning process. It shapes the learner's engagement and understanding of the lesson. As a future elementary teacher who is flexible to adapt to changes in the teaching method, I am utilizing the convenient use of ICT to enhance and support the educational system to achieve effective teaching in the new normal setting.
Through television availability in our classroom, I created a PowerPoint presentation, which led me to have an interactive discussion—having a kind of interactive discussion enables my learners to achieve the lesson's objectives. I realized that incorporating video clips and pictures is also an excellent method for catching their interest; it allows my learners to share their experiences and build a solid connection with their co-learners and the teacher. It shapes learners' communication and socialization skills. As a student teacher, PowerPoint presentation helps me use images, audio, and video to have a more significant visual impact. It helps me refine my materials to salient points and content that shape my learners to grasp the topic or my objectives fully.
But ICT integration is not only limited to the use of television and PowerPoint presentations and other ICT-related materials such as downloadable video clips on YouTube and other websites. I was reminded by the advice of a former college instructor that teachers utilize technology to achieve the optimum teaching and learning process. I have to consider the ethical considerations and appropriate actions before using technologically advanced materials. In the video I used in the lesson, I realized I should have used just a clip, not the full-length videos, as the latter consumes the time allowed for the lesson. The video should not be the one teaching the entire hour. Instead, I should only use it as an aid to motivate learners to participate.
The ICT can also be used on modular print learners, wherein I can add video links in the self-learning modules and learning activity sheets to supplement the discussion with videos that learners can watch. I can also use pictures readily accessible from the internet. This is particularly true since we are on a limited face-to-face modality. I realized that those on online asynchronous and synchronous modality are using learning management systems such as Edmodo and Google Classroom, where lessons are posted, and learners submit their outputs. Discussions are done using Google Meet or Zoom.
I think that the pandemic has brought positive changes as well. The integration of ICT has been deepened, and teachers and learners have become more aware and knowledgeable about using these applications and devices. As a future teacher, I should incorporate technology into my lesson. I should be flexible in adopting changes in my teaching. Technology is beneficial and effective in today's situation. As a future teacher, I must be responsible for using technology because I believe that everything has a limitation.
