Welcome to Korean class!
This course enables students to study Korean language and literature through the conceptual understanding of communication, connection, creativity and perspective. The focus of learning Korean is connecting myself and the world around us and to solve problems that we face everyday. We will be appreciating a variety of literary texts and non-literary works throughout the year to explore ideas, think critically, and represent opinions in creative ways.
(Quarter 1)
In Unit 1, students will have opportunities to explore various literary techniques such as metaphor and symbolism in poems used to deliver authors’ thoughts and feelings. By understanding the effect of these literary techniques, students will be able to create their own poems reflecting their thoughts using metaphor and symbols. students will be reading short stories to summarize based on the structure of different types of texts which would help them to understand the plot more in depth. In addition, they will learn the rules and attitude for discussions and debates in order to discover solutions for real world issues. Students would analyze the stories and other non-literary texts to summarize and share their thoughts together.

(Quarter 2)
In Unit 2, students will explore the value of literature by reading works that convey meaningful ideas and express beauty through language. They will reflect on the insights gained from these works and internalize values for living a meaningful life. In addition, students will learn to write with respect and consideration for readers, following the proper writing process to construct and express meaning effectively. They will practice expressing personal reflections on their own experiences in writing, while organizing ideas clearly and purposefully. Through these activities, students will develop both the skills and attitudes necessary for thoughtful reading and writing.

(Quarter 3)
Students will engage in literary activities that help them appreciate the value of meaningful content expressed through language. They will read texts carefully to identify the author’s main arguments and themes. Building on insights gained from their readings, students will develop attitudes that help them internalize important values for living a good life. Additionally, they will practice writing persuasive essays using appropriate evidence and clear expressions to support their claims.

In what ways can literature influence our values and attitudes toward life?
What strategies can we use to write convincing arguments with strong evidence and clear language?

(Quarter 4)
Students will learn various ways to express their thoughts and opinions. They will learn to understand the hidden meanings in Korean idiomatic expressions and how to use them appropriately depending on the situation. Students will also learn to identify the author’s main argument or theme by carefully reading texts. They will also explore how words can have different meanings depending on the context. Through diverse types of media, they will gather useful information and actively utilize it to efficiently present their ideas. This project will enable them to learn how to select appropriate content and media for their purpose or topic.
