Welcome to Korean class!
This course enables students to study Korean language and literature through the conceptual understanding of communication, connection, creativity and perspective. The focus of learning Korean is connecting myself and the world around us and to solve problems that we face everyday. We will be appreciating a variety of literary texts and non-literary works throughout the year to explore ideas, think critically, and represent opinions in creative ways.
(Quarter 1)
In Unit 1, students will have opportunities to explore various literary works written in the past and understand how social, cultural and historical context is reflected in Korean literature. To enhance their literary expressions and language skills, students will create their own poems on the topic of 'The meaning of you'. Students will also read literary works from the past and work on their essays analyzing the past and present of Korean society.

(Quarter 2)
In Unit 2, students will learn the concept and characteristics of conversation/discourse and how to respond to others' feelings and thoughts appropriately. Students would be able to perform a role play according to specific authentic contexts, enabling them to understand the importance of interaction in conversation. Additionally, students will be reading literary works to compare with the recreated versions such as movies and dramas and study the elements of literature and multimedia.

What are the goals for the conversation and what influences the speakers' intention?
How does 'recreated' work change the theme/topic of the story?
(Quarter 3)
Various expression methods are used in literary works, such as rhyming, ironic, paradox, and satire. The author conveys his or her thoughts and feelings through these expression methods, which can also reshape the meaning of the whole work. In Unit 3, students will appreciate works in which various expression methods are used, and engage in activities to express their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. They can also learn the correct pronunciation and notation of Hangul as well as idioms, and engage in desirable language activities.

How can I write articles containing my own experiences using various expression methods?
Why should it be pronounced and marked correctly?
(Quarter 4)
In chapter 4, students will learn various explanation methods and the effects of them. The focus is on predicting and reading texts, as well as developing the ability to write logically. Additionally, through editing, students can cultivate an attitude of improving their own writing. Moreover, through reading, students will have an opportunity to realize the value and importance of reading, and can develop an attitude of making reading a part of our daily lives.
