In AP Studio Art students create a portfolio of work to demonstrate inquiry through art and design and development of materials, processes, and ideas over the course of a year. Portfolios include works of art and design, process documentation, and written information about the work presented. In May, students submit portfolios for evaluation based on specific criteria, which include skillful synthesis of materials, processes, ideas and sustained investigation through practice, experimentation, and revision, guided by questions. Students may choose to submit any or all of the AP Portfolio Exams. Students can submit a Drawing, 2D or 3D portfolio.
Semester 1: Students conduct foundation year, University level research into historical and Contemporary Art-makers that echo the conceptual and aesthetic sentiments of the student's artistic interests. Writing and credible research habits are a vital support for students in helping them shape their train of thought, before translating that thinking into Art-making.
Semester2: AP Artists experiment with materials, methodologies, and processes that will help answer their four Essential Questions through making. Students create a minimum of eight final art works, supported by formalized process documentation (photos, notes, videos) that will be used to present gallery-ready work for their final College Board portfolio in May.
FINAL PORTFOLIO:
Submission takes place w/ Ms. Allen Jung During School Hours on Thursday, May 1st, 2025.
*Students are evaluated throughout this course by means of unit assignment rubrics. Learning for understanding is also demonstrated throughout the studio art-making process in class, weekly Checkpoints, and Critiques.
August 19th- October 25th, 2024
Unit Description:
AP Studio Artists will dive deeply into understanding the greater Art World, by creating and presenting their "team" of artists that the student feels they align with, both on a conceptual and aesthetic level.
Students will also be writing a University style Thesis proposal to help them in fleshing out their year-long investigation into a topic of their choosing. Students will begin to develop and understanding of their artistic orientation within the historical and Contemporary Art world. This thesis will prove as the bedrock for their portfolio's trajectory, formed around four Essential Questions supported by credible research.
Post their research phase, AP Studio Artists begin translating their findings into visual interpretations, creating their first piece out of eight, beginning their year-long Portoflio journey.
October 28th- January 23rd, 2025
Unit Description:
With the foundation of research and conceptual/aesthetic identity developed in Q1, AP Studio Artists can insightfully begin their artistic investigation for the year. Material experimentation, educated decision-making and their Thesis Proposals, will help ground students in their journey to obtaining a deep understanding of their chosen concept.
Students engage in a Critique after each final piece is completed. Critiques are important part of the Artist/Design process, as feedback from peers and the teacher are incorporated to revisit/revise works. New vocabulary is introduced and students are highly encouraged to push the sophistication of their descriptive language.
January 24th- May 1st, 2025

In addition to the Visual Arts Learning Standards, students are guided in their practice via Harvard's Project Zero Studio Thinking Project, and the eight Studio Habits of Mind.
