Description of Learning:

In this unit, students will develop analytical and speaking skills by deconstructing TED TALK Speeches. The TED TALKS by Bill Gates will serve as a body of work. This unit will guide students to create their own unique TED talks for the class and possibly a school-wide TED event. TED Talks offer students an opportunity beyond the classroom to have a voice and share “ideas worth spreading.”

Students will be:  listening to a variety of speeches based on local and global issues; analyzing rhetorical appeals and stylistic techniques that make speeches powerful; researching a topic of your choice that has personal relevance to you; organizing a 2-3 minute soapbox speech.

Inquiry Statements

Content-based: What approaches/tools are available to guide us in producing a powerful speech?

Skills based: How do rhetorical and stylistic techniques make speeches effective?

Concept-based: How does a speaker’s mode of communication influence one’s perspective and understanding of a particular culture?
