A blind rivet is a tubular fastener used to join materials together when you can only access one side of the work. We use Rivets all of the time in robotics to join extrusion with gussets. This allows for a semi permanent connection for the frame of the robot that is quic to assemble and lighter than using screws and nuts all over the chassis.
To the right you can see the parts of a rivet and an example of how they engage with the gusset and extrusion. Below is a video overview of using a rivet gun.
A hole is drilled through the materials to be joined
The rivet is inserted through the hole
Using a rivet tool, you pull the mandrel
The mandrel draws the tail end of the rivet inward, causing it to expand and form a secure joint
When enough force is applied, the mandrel breaks off at a predetermined point
The remaining expanded rivet body holds the materials together
