Australia’s first people, known as Aboriginal Australians, have lived on the Australian continent for over 50,000 years.
Aboriginal Australians have a rich history of spirituality, agriculture, aquaculture, art and dance. However, much of this history was lost during and after colonisation.
Today, there are 250 distinct language groups spread throughout Australia. Each group is unique, may speak different language dialects, have varying traditions and therefore, we cannot generalise Aboriginal identity and culture.

Why do we study this text?
The Stolen Generation impacted so many Aboriginal people in Australia. As a nation, it is important that we hear the stories of people who were taken as a part of The Stolen Generation. 'Who Am I?' offers one perspective of this experience however, we have members of our Kolbe Community who have also been impacted by this event in history. In learning about The Stolen Generation, we honour these stories.
Watch the below clip of Mrs Walley, Mrs Dann's mother and member of The Stolen Generation. In this video she recounts the horrific events she experienced during The Stolen Generation such as being separated from her family, growing up without a connection to culture, losing her native language and the emotional trauma still felt to this day.
