The purpose of a persuasive text is to convince, motivate, or move readers towards a certain point of view, or opinion.
As we know, different text types have different conventions. As we are studying persuasive texts we will be learning about the conventions of persuasion.
These are also called persuasive devices or rhetorical devices.
Think about the following...
When was a time in your life that you were persuasive?
Who were you trying to persuade?
What did you say/do to get your opinion across?
Watch the YouTube video focussing on why we persuade.
Your teacher is going to ask you to find someone you have not spoken to yet. In your pair, discuss these two questions:
(1) Why do we persuade others?
(2) Why is persuasion important?
Be prepared to share your ideas with the class!
When we are persuading others, it is important to remember we are not just telling someone our opinion. We are actually trying to convince that person to agree with our opinion and side with us.
Therefore, opinion and persuasion is different!
