All of the short stories we will read this term will have a deeper meaning, moral or lesson that the author is trying to convey to readers. This is known as the "theme" of the story.
A theme is a concept or message that an author explores in a text.
Readers need to look beneath the characters, setting and plot to figure out what the author is trying to say. What message are they trying to get across to us?
There are often more than one theme to any given short story.

Read each passage. Identify the theme within the passage and write it in one clear sentence. Then explain how the theme develops and applies to all people.
