Poetry is one of the most emotional forms of literature.
When poets write poetry, it is likely they are trying to get us to feel something about a person, topic or thing.
Reader response = How readers (us) are positioned to feel.
Poets position us to feel certain emotions through their use of poetic devices and their use of language. Depending on how they use these devices/language, we will be positioned to feel any number of emotions. Examples include:
Task: Have a look at the below examples from different poems. Can you identify the most relevant emotion that you believe the poet is encouraging you to feel?
Then, on page 22 of your study guide, see if you can identify what poetic device(s) are being used to encourage this response.
