Students identify extreme users.
Students identify analogous inspiration through movie trailers.
General Description
The objective of this section is to identify extreme users and inspire students through analogous inspiration by having them listen to movie trailer background music.
Activity 1 (Budget 20 minutes)
Students identify extreme users.
Teacher reminds students about the importance of extreme users by showing PPT slide on Extreme Users, then has students work in their group to identify the extreme users for the challenge and record their results on the Extreme Users handout.
Activity 2 (Budget 25 minutes)
Students identify movie trailer music attributes (tempo, pitch, transition) as analogous inspiration for the challenge.
1. Teacher shows the students the Movie Trailer Slide of movie genres and writes 3 genres on the board.
2. Teacher disconnects projection so that students can only hear the music then plays the music for each of the subsequent slides and asks the students to identify the movie, tempo (slow, mid, fast), pitch (mainly high, mid, low) and which trailer had a transition after all three have been identified. (Onward) at 20 seconds to highlight the visuals in the trailer. For each trailer the teacher may need to play the trailer a couple of times for students to pick up where musical transitions occur.
3. Teacher has a brief class discussion on how students can apply what they have learned to their music for their pitch.
