Activity 1.2.1 (55 minutes or take home assignment)
Students are asked to read Chapter 1 in the book, "Blown to Bits" by Abelson, Ledeen and Lewis. This book is available as a free download from http://www.bitsbook.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/B2B_3.pdf or can be downloaded one chapter at a time from http://www.bitsbook.com/excerpts/ .
The teacher needs to explain the importance of technical writing. Written responses in APCSP need to be clear and concise while thoroughly answering the prompt. It is a good teaching practice to show students examples of high quality work so that they have a model to refer to. The student written response resource gives them the explanation and the model.
Students are asked to complete the Chapter 1 worksheet.
Reflection and discussion: After students have completed the reading assignment and the worksheet, give them an opportunity to discuss their findings in small groups. Consider giving them discussion prompts, such as
Which Koan surprised you?
Is there a Koan that you disagree with? Why?
What is a personal example when you have found technology can be both good and bad?
What is the relationship between technology and power?
