The Go Baby, Go! project was started at the University of Delaware and has been adopted by schools and service groups around the world. Its mission has focused on increasing mobility and quality of life solutions for children whose access to such may be limited during their early developmental years for a variety of reasons. It was always intended to be an innovative movement for inclusiveness, and its growth is a testimony to the project’s success.
Centered around the modification of ride-on cars for children with disabilities, the network of engaged participants and leaders has expanded as individuals and organizations independently spearhead their own programs to build ride-on cars for children in their communities.
This project directly ties to kinematics and motion objectives in the physics classroom and has potential to connect to other CTAE objectives in healthcare and IT pathways. The therapeutic and physical therapy correlations in healthcare and IT options for automation and/or interactive components for the mobility solutions allow for the development of cross-curricular teams. This can be an engineering-only project or it can be a project where groups from two or three different specialties collaborate to tackle the problem for even more robust and engaging solutions.
The curriculum resources developed by ITEEA (linked below) are comprehensive in their approach to the project and allow enough direction for the students to self-organize and identify community members and groups to engage for funding, resources, volunteer opportunities, and creating a community showcase event to introduce the new owners to their devices.
ITEEA Resources
International Technology and Engineering Educators Association (ITEEA) has partnered with the University of Delaware to create curriculum for schools and organizations to adopt the Go Baby Go! program. This curriculum includes resources for safety checklists, fundraising, manuals, sample training materials, liability forms, ideas and procedures for hosting a delivery and drive event, and more. Access to these resources is free for educators and simply requires registration for access to the materials.
