Students review the Challenge and define a class and individual Need to Know List to identify research and technical gaps.
The objective of this section is to refocus on the specific requirements of the challenge by having students identify the gaps in their knowledge with respect to those specifications and who/how those gaps will be filled. In some cases it will be the direct instruction of the teacher and in other cases it will be the distribution of work by the students.
1. Teacher has students review the challenge and hands out Need to Know worksheet. Students record their Need to Know List. Note that there are three columns but only the first two should be filled in, "What do you already know" and "What do you Need to know". Toward the end of the unit students will fill in the third column with "What they have learned".
2. Teacher facilitates student think-pair-share for a class Need to Know List that teacher records on large post it note paper.
3. If necessary students revise their individual Need to Know List based on the class Need to Know List.
4. Teacher has student groups add "Lead Person Responsible" at the top of the third column of the Need to Know List. Then, teacher has students discuss as a group who is responsible in their group and when the instructor is responsible for what they Need to Know. The teacher has a class discussion to get class consensus on what the teacher is responsible for that the students Need to Know.
