Students identify building codes and zoning regulations to guide the design process with relevant, real world constraints.
Student groups will decide how they will dive into and research applicable, local zoning laws and building codes for their structure. Their homes will have to follow various, different rules based on how they decide to design their home such as a fixed, permanent structure versus a home built upon a trailer chassis. Local laws for housing vary widely. Rules and regulations for the myriad options need to be determined and documented in order to aid in design criteria and decision making.
For example: if the home is designed as a "tow behind" trailer home what criteria need to be met in order to comply with DOT regulations and what safety concerns should they design for in order to tow at highway speeds? If it is a fixed, permanent home will it need a septic system or might it tie into municipal sewer? What other options exist based on your unique criteria and constraints?
If you have partnered with an established builder or architect this is a great opportunity for them to deliver relevant content to the students regarding their building requirements and act as a resource for further questioning.
