Last month, almost all of the secondary students at CCS went to watch the annual junior play. This year's showcase was The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, an absolute classic. The crowd's murmurs indicated that the expectations weren’t super high for this performance, but as soon as the play began that thought was immediately thrown out of the auditorium. The first thing that jumped out to me was how well-made the costumes were. In all honesty, I was expecting the usual low-effort, low-quality costumes that I had seen in other school productions, but these costumes were vibrant and complex without taking the attention away from the actors themselves. In particular, the White Witch (Gracie Brumlow) and Miss Tumnus (Sophia Okada) were especially exceptional. Although it wasn't a Broadway-level performance the acting was good as well. They succeeded in pulling the audience members into the world of C.S. Lewis. There was a good balance between seriousness and comedic relief, and I think that they did an excellent job of summarizing the large book into a short play. Though everything wasn’t perfect, like the sounds of the roaring being off, the play was well executed. Whether it be the clever moving set or the brilliant costume design it was apparent that a lot of hard work and passion went into the annual junior play.
