The changing of the seasons means the changing of the sports, as we go from basketball goals to baseball runs, from dribbling the ball to swinging a bat, and our fans go from indoors to outdoors. The new year brings a flurry of new possibilities and goals set for the upcoming season, in hopes that each team goes farther than last year's did.
“I want to…be a role model; set the tone…I want what’s best for the team, right,” junior, Tyler Stinson mused for the upcoming season, “I want to keep them engaged with baseball, and I want to teach them, or at least with my actions, show them what it’s like to be a leader.” Junior, Ethan Harvey, proposed a similar idea, “My main goal would be probably to help out the younger kids as much as I can to get them ready for all their highschool careers.” With those goals in mind, the boys continue to practice on field and off as they prepare for the season. Each generation of athletes works to improve their own skills and the skills of the team to help prepare them for their own times of leadership for future seasons.
Not only do they set goals for the team, they reminisce on the seniors of last year that have moved on from Covenant. “Those two, Jesse and Asher, not only had a skill set [that] greatly helped the team, but they had their moments when it came to being leaders,” Stinson stated, “They were the funnest guys to be around, and plus, Charlie just being on the team, like losing the seniors was a big deal.” However, while the loss of strong members on the past team has its downs, Harvey focused on the positives stating, “It’s kind of made us better cause now our younger guys have to step up as well. It kind of teaches them the role of leadership,” which is a valuable trait to learn and grow in.
However, many goals you set for the beginning of the year focus on the end of the year games. “I think if we worked hard enough we could become district champs for three times in a row,” Stinson contemplated, “I think once we get to state playoffs and we get Alpha knocked out of there, we could win state.” A good goal to work to achieve as the season progresses and the team grows closer together.
“The tide of the game can be turned after a good play or a good hit,” Stinson stated. “It’s the entire team that weighs the team down but one person can have an affect on the team.” It’s always good to remember that your attitude affects not only yourself, but the players and the game in its entirety. With a positive mindset, a calm attitude, and a connected team, anything is possible.
