On the wonderful days of March 25 through the 26th, high school art students competed in the 3A TAPPS State Art competition where they submitted their original art pieces and participated in timed challenges.
“I did all types of categories,” senior Ashlynn Feliciano explained. “I had my hand in a lot of stuff in like making furniture, doing fashion, doing art history, and drawings too…I knew if I made so many pieces, I would be so well known around every category, so that’s how I got my high score.” Ashlynn accumulated 80 points for the school, submitted over ten projects, and won five first-place medals and many more for her artistry.
Students can compete in the still life drawing contest, where they sit in a room with other participants and draw a still life that’s right in front of them. The second challenge others choose to participate in is called the Seek-and-Sketch.
“You’re on the campus and there’s a lot of stuff outside,” sophomore Coltyn Watson described. “You have to find something to draw, and you have a two-hour time limit so basically just find something to draw.” That, he did, as he placed in the Black and White Seek-and-Sketch after drawing a fire hydrant.
Other competitors participated in the challenges while some chose only to submit their pieces, whether they were pottery, drawings, tapestry, sculptures, films, and a variety of other categories.
“A girl is stuck in a government world, where everyone is left-brained,” Junior, Amelie Fix explained about her short film. “She has to be the only one with a creative mind, willing to think outside of the boxes that ideas are meant to be kept in.” Amelie placed first in the Short Film-Documentary category with her film titled “Left Brain World.”
Overall, the competition was highly successful for the highschool students of CCS and showed a promising future for the Art program as they were awarded 3A TAPPS State Champion. Congratulations to all the competitors and participants in the competition and we hope to see y’all again next year!
