The recent end of the football season has weighed heavily on some football players. Many seasons end in an unwanted way, yet it is best to make the most out of it. No season, no game, no sport ends in true failure, rather every loss and win are steps towards the improvement of skills and character.
“We’re a building team. This is our first year in eleven-man,” junior, Joshua DeRamus stated. “A lot of teams sometimes don’t even get a win, and I think the way we’re able to compete with other teams especially like when we’re all working together, it’s a sight to see.” This team practiced hard in and out of the season and continues to improve for the future eleven-man seasons.
As the athletes were asked to describe districts, each player focused on the positives of the season. Junior and quarterback, Preston Van House answered, “The competition was good and showed us what we’re really up against so hopefully we’ll do better this year.” DeRamus agreed, “We started off pretty well...We were able to beat one of the teams in our district, Rosehill, so that was pretty good.” The game was a sight to see as the Covenant Cougars crushed Rosehill 13-6 while all the fans cheered. Districts had their ups and downs, but the important thing is the knowledge and experience gained from each win and loss.
When asked what qualities a football player required, sophomore, Kade Crihfield replied, “Passion…the ability to want to play football.” DeRamus took this a step further stating, “Leadership, but also you need to have…a grit and determination that drives you to do hard work even if you don’t want to.” Each quality plays an important role in the effort given during a match and how far you are willing to push yourself.
“Unity [is] probably our greatest strength,” DeRamus stated. “We’re not like a super strong team or a super big team but what really drives us is our unity.” Van House seconded this statement, replying, “We learned that our strength…is our brothers. And in order to win and keep up that strength, we must play for each other and not ourselves…and the Lord.”
In all they did, the football team gave glory to God, every win and every loss. With the growth and accomplishments of the Covenant football team this year, we cannot wait to see how far they will go next year.
